covered with Galvanised Iron Sheets carried on the existing roof trusses, in order to protect the interior plaster of the Hall itself.

(ii) Library. Untouched.

(iii) Arts Lecture Rooms. Joinery and wood floors have been removed. All the lecture

rooms are structurally sound and the plaster is in good condition. Roofs are intact.

(iv) Engineering Drawing Office & Registrar's Office in Annexe.

Both of these buildings have been demolished and the bricks stacked, apparently for use elsewhere.

(j) OLD WORKSHOPS IN BONHAM ROADI No roofs left. In pretty poor condition.

(k) VICE-CHANCELLOR'S LODGE & STAFF RESIDENCES.

All in excellent condition. One

of the Staff houses is already occupied. Roofs are watertight, the majority of floors intact; 60 to 80 per cent of the joinery intact; baths and some sani- tary fittings undamaged. Electrical wiring needs overhaul. These buildings can each be made ready for occupation, by 12 men in about a fortnight, and very little engineer stores are required.

(1) UNIVERSITY HOSTELS. (Three buildings of Male Students' Quarters.)

Structurally sound. Roofs intact.

Require joinery, fittings and wiring.

(m) EU TONG SEN GYMNASIUM. Practically intact except in wood block floor and sani-

tary fittings.

7. In spite of the looting, it is evident that the structures which remain represent assets of considerable value to the University. It is recommended that in the interest of the provision of European accommodation in the Colony, steps should be taken forth- with to repair the Staff Residences and the Vice-Chancellor's Lodge. Until work can be started, watchmen should be appointed as it is evident that looting of the joinery in these houses is still continuing.

8. Given the necessary teak wood for joinery and supply of sanitary and electrical fittings, there should be little difficulty in restarting the University by September 1946. At least one of the men's hostels could be rapidly put into condition for occupation and adequate lecture rooms and other facilities can easily be provided.
